The Old Pembroke Library
There is not only an exhibition on Vitebsk in Centre Pompidou opening soon, but also a conference in Cambridge on 19 and 20 April. We chose this image for the conference because the building depicted here is the old villa of a Vitebsk banker that was confiscated by the Bolsheviks and given to The People’s Art School founded by Marc Chagall in 1918. Some say that the man with the umbrella is Chagall himself. Who knows. Se non è vero, è ben trovato.
Chagall writes his name many times in Cyrillic and Latin characters and he dates the painting: Witebsk 1918. I don’t know why our colleagues of the Centre Pompidou date it one year later. And I will probably forget to ask this at the opening next week.
The preparations for the conference are almost done and the website is now ready for registrations.
Please read all about the conference here.
Here’s the press kit for the exhibition. And here you will find the press release of the conference.
There seems no turning back anymore. It’s time to finish my lecture…
